The Monroe County Health Department is currently investigating an outbreak of Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. During this investigation it has come to our attention that an individual recently diagnosed with Pertussis spent a significant amount of time at a local grocery store/gas station in Lindside, WV, during their infectious period, which was May 9, 2025, through June 16, 2025.
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by bacteria. It primarily affects the respiratory system and causes inflammation and swelling of the airways. It is spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can be mild and often resembles the common cold, such as a runny nose or mild cough, but can progress with the cough becoming more severe and occurring in intense, uncontrollable fits, often followed by a “whooping” sound when the person tries to inhale.
Pertussis (whooping cough) can affect people of all ages but is most dangerous for infants under 6 months of age. Older adults, pregnant women, those with underlying respiratory diseases, and those with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk.
Pertussis is preventable with vaccination. It is also treatable with the appropriate antibiotics.
