John Leon Nickell, born July 17, 1947, in Ronceverte, WV, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on July 1, 2026, at Lewisburg Healthcare Center in his beloved hometown.

John’s life was deeply rooted in Ronceverte, and his presence touched many as a devoted family member, cherished companion, and steadfast friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Nickell, who stood by him with unwavering support and devotion. John also leaves behind his sisters, Frances Ballard and Mary Fawcett, who shared in his life’s journey, cherishing memories and family heritage. His extended family survives him as well: sister-in-law Betty “Grandma” Stidom; nieces Jodi Bostic, Connie Hall, Billie Walker, and Samantha Tincher; and nephews Daniel Copeland, Michael Hambrick and Robert Tincher – all of whom held special places in his heart.

John’s legacy is also woven through those he has joined in peaceful rest: his son John Nickell, Jr., daughter Beatrice Beach, and his first wife Marlene Burns Nickell. He is also preceded in death by his sisters Linda Copeland, Tina Blankenship, Beverly Dewitt, and Joan Thompson.

John’s journey was marked by enduring relationships and the quiet strength he offered to his loved ones. Renowned for his steady demeanor, compassion, and commitment, those who knew him best remember a man of integrity and loyalty. His life’s joys were found not only in lifelong connections but also in the kindness he readily extended to others.

Family and friends are invited to remember John at a visitation to be held on July 6, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by a funeral service at 12. Both will take place at Morgan Funeral Home, 252 Montvue Dr., Lewisburg, WV 24901 with Pastor Gary Baker officiating.

As we reflect on John’s life, we honor the legacy he leaves in memories shared and love given. His steadfast presence will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. The family would like to thank the staff of Lewisburg Healthcare for the wonderful care and friendship provided during his stay.

Online guestbook can be signed at www.morganfh.net. Arrangements entrusted to Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg, WV.
