Ronceverte-Agnes Leona O’Brien, 64, a native of Ronceverte, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in El Paso, Texas, following a short illness.

She was born Jan. 17, 1949, in Ronceverte.

Agnes spent the majority of her life as a caregiver while residing in Ronceverte. In 1994, Agnes moved to Tacoma, Washington, with her daughter and spent the next 15 years providing family care plan support to single parents serving as soldiers where ever the Army moved her family. Her travels took her near and far to places like Tacoma, Washington; Sierra Vista, Arizona; Germany, England and in 2009 she moved to El Paso, Texas.

Agnes was an active resident of the Palisades Retirement Community in El Paso. She attended weekly church services, was an avid Bingo and Dominos fanatic and loved to participate in Palisades’ Wii Bowling tournaments. When she was not participating in community activities, she enjoyed doing word searches as well as reading Danielle Steele novels.

Agnes is survived by: her daughter, Melissa “Missy” O’Brien, a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army currently stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. She was the proud grandmother of two grandsons, Joshua, 19, a freshman at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) and Marc, 14, a freshman at Franklin High School, El Paso. Agnes also leaves behind many close friends within her Retirement Community as well as her extended military family. Many loved Agnes and affectionately called her “Granny.”

Agnes was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia “’Tommy” Elizabeth O’Brien and sister, Mary Catherine O’Brien Highlander.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte, with Rev. Dan Gaither and Rev. Robert Hefner, Jr. officiating.

Friends and family may visit from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Burial will immediately follow in the Hanger-Welch Cemetery on Muddy Creek Mountain.
