As part of its commitment to lifelong learning, Carnegie Hall offers a series of classes and workshops to enlighten and inspire learners of all ages. These unique learning opportunities are taught primarily in small group settings at the Hall. The Spring 2025 Classes & Workshops offers a Josephine Knot Market Basket workshop taught by Kathy Talley on Friday, Apr. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A part of Carnegie Hall’s Appalachian Heritage Series, the Josephine Knot Market Basket class teaches students how to create a functional and beautiful basket in this beginner level class. Participants will learn basic weaving techniques to build and shape this sturdy, all-purpose carry-all. Functional design features a solid wood swing handle and a decorative Josephine knot at the center. All materials and tools needed to make this basket will be provided by the instructor. Students must be at least 16 years of age or older and no experience is necessary.
Registration is $125/members and $145/nonmembers, but scholarships are available for Greenbrier County students and participants over 50 years of age who only pay $45.
Carnegie Hall then continues its 2025 Spring Classes & Workshops Series with a weaving class taught by Barbara Volk. This unique learning opportunity is taught in small group settings in Carnegie’s Potterfield Weaving Studio. The Beaded Bracelet Weaving on a Loom workshop takes place on Saturday, Apr. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In this class, students will learn the basic elements of loom woven beadwork from start to finish as they create a beautiful bracelet from a wide selection of colorful glass beads. Each student will use graph paper and simple to learn skills to design and then create a one of kind beaded bracelet. At the end of the day, students will leave with a quality piece of jewelry and the confidence to continue beaded weaving on their own.
Registration is $45/members and $55/nonmembers, with automatic youth scholarships that reduce registration fee to only $15.
Also on Apr. 26, Carnegie Hall teaching artist Lynda Weischowsky returns to Carnegie Hall with a Stained-Glass 3D Hanging Basket workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
In this beginner friendly “spring is coming” theme, students will create an elegant hanging basket of ivy in glass. Using pre-cut pieces of glass, this project is constructed in a layered fashion, using wire wrapping and decorative soldering. These beautiful vines are very forgiving to work with and the results are very lifelike-but no watering required. While no glass cutting skills are needed, we will be assembling the basket with lead came. Students are encouraged to bring a work apron or shirt.
Registration is $95/members and $105/nonmembers, with automatic scholarships for students 18 years of age and under that reduce the class registration fee to only $25.
