William Malcolm Jack, known to family and friends as Malcolm, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Hilldale, WV, following a long illness. He was born on Apr. 12, 1959, in Clifton Forge, VA, and Nurse Angel handed him to his mom and dad, Margaret Emille Young Jack and the late Rev. Charles Clifford Jack. Malcolm lived a life marked by kindness, friendliness, and a quiet strength that touched all who knew him.
Malcolm attended Greenbrier East High School and later worked for Pepsi Bottling Company, along with various other jobs throughout his life. Those who knew him remember a man who met life with a steady spirit and a warm heart.
He had a natural talent for drawing and a remarkable ability to play music by ear. Malcolm was especially gifted as a drummer, and his musical talent led him to perform with Ambush, where he won the West Virginia State Fair Talent Contest sponsored by Anheuser-Busch. He went on to play the drums in several local bands over the years, sharing his love of music with others and leaving behind many fond memories of his performances. Music was one of the ways he expressed himself, and it brought joy both to him and to those around him.
Malcolm was also a devoted sports fan. He was a diehard WVU football fan and attended several games including the Gator Bowl. He also cheered for the Miami Dolphins and enjoyed attending NASCAR races. When he was not following sports or making music, he enjoyed watching television and spending time in the comfort of familiar routines. These interests were part of the life he built and the memories he shared with those closest to him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Charles Jack, his companion Patty Stewart, his infant brother Charles Jack, his brother Wallace Jack, and his biological sisters Brenda Moats, Shannon Pullin, Rhonda Welch, and Bonnie Bowen. He was also preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Their memories remained a part of his life, and he carried the bonds of family with him throughout his years.
Malcolm is survived by his loving mother, Margaret Jack of Alderson, who is residing at the Lewisburg Healthcare Center. He is also survived by his sister, Merriam Jack Cole, and her husband JJ of Asbury; his cousin Kaye Miller and her husband Buddy, who made her home with the Jack family of New Bern, NC; his biological sisters Paula Conner of Millboro, VA, Bobbie Gardner of Monterey, VA, and Dena Villarreal of NC; and many loving biological nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his stepdaughters Melanie Stewart and companion Scott Hylton of Forest Hill, and Mandy Wysocki of Ashville, NC; his step-granddaughters Derian Blain and Demi Mills of Ashville, North Carolina; his nephew JJ Cole and his wife Leann of Lewisburg; his nieces Tish Brown of Morgantown and Amanda DePriest and her husband Charley of Williamsburg; and four great-nephews and one great-niece.
Malcolm will be remembered for the simple and meaningful ways he showed love and loyalty to his family and friends. He was kind and friendly, and he had a presence that made others feel welcome. Whether he was behind a drum set, talking about a football game, or spending time with those he loved, he brought his own special light into the lives of others. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
A graveside service and burial will be on Saturday, May 9, at 6 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson, WV with Pastor Bobbie Jo Gardner officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Scott Pinnell, Rick Burdette, Herbie Burette, Frank Lane, Anthony Adkins, and Bradley Mitchell.
