The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) and Bluefield State College (BSC), School of Nursing and Allied Health, signed a collaboration agreement to provide inter-professional educational experiences for students from both higher education institutions.

The WVSOM osteopathic medical students and BSC nursing and radiology technician students will be working together in a clinical setting to work through various clinical scenarios.

“Bluefield State is thrilled to partner with WVSOM to offer the students of both institutions an unparalleled learning experience,” said Dr. Marsha V. Krotseng, president of Bluefield State College. “Our students gain tremendous knowledge and confidence working side-by-side in patient care simulations modeled on real-life situations they could encounter in a hospital or clinic.”

WVSOM President Michael Adelman, D.O., concurs with Krotseng. “This is an excellent learning opportunity for students from both institutions,” he said. “WVSOM is happy to formalize our partnership with Bluefield State College.”

WVSOM will also develop, implement and evaluate a program for BSC nursing students to introduce them to mannequin, standardized patient, and multi-modality simulations, as well as orientation to electronic health records and the Clinical Evaluation Center facility. This program would occur on an annual basis.

Adelman sees a long-lasting impact on this collaboration. “As the students complete their degrees and begin working, the health care of West Virginia residents will benefit.”

Each institution will provide expertise and faculty/staff to ensure all students receive a high quality educational experience. These experiences will occur on WVSOM’s campus in the Clinical Evaluation Center.
