The Sovereignty of Christ

From Pastor Dean, Emmanuel Community Church

If we could just remember to put ourselves under the sovereignty of Christ how much more peaceful and restful our lives would be. I say that because we have no problem being under the sovereign control of Christ when things seem to be going smoothly… but when we find ourselves in difficult situations, then we panic, seek our own remedies, and lose our faith. We forget, even in the difficulties, the disappointments, Christ is in control and that He has a plan and purpose. I think we all will just “shake our heads” in heaven when we realize how much time we spent in “panic” when in actuality, God was working behind the scenes to result in beautiful, magnificent, eternal outcomes.

It’s not to say that we should not seek out remedies to difficult situations, but in so doing we come before the throne of God to seek His guidance and direction from the Word.  Even if things do not change to our liking or expectation, our relationship with Christ and His love for us relieves our worry. My prayer for you and me is this: Lord, we all needed this reminder. We want to stay so close to You that even in times of trouble or disappointment we have confidence in Your plan and purpose.

I really like the help the Amplified Bible gives us in its rendering of Philippians 4:12-13. 12. “I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. 13. I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose – I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]”
