After serving as editor of the Mountain Messenger for the last nine years, it is time for me to say goodbye.
This month, I will be leaving the newspaper to begin a new chapter in my career. While I am not leaving Greenbrier County or the community that is such an important part of my life, I will be stepping away from the editor’s desk and the privilege of telling this community’s stories each week.
Since joining this newspaper in 2017, I have had the opportunity to witness history unfold, celebrate accomplishments both large and small, and meet some of the most remarkable people our region has to offer.
Local journalism provides a unique and valuable window into a community. Over the years, I have spent hours upon hours in government meetings, classrooms, businesses, and at community events. Through it all, I have been continually reminded that the heart of Greenbrier County is its people.
To our readers, thank you. Thank you for inviting me into your lives through these pages. Thank you for your story ideas, your phone calls, your encouragement, and even your corrections. Most of all, thank you for caring about local news and for recognizing the importance of staying connected to one another.
I am equally grateful to the public officials, educators, first responders, business owners, volunteers, and residents who took the time to answer questions, provide information, and share their experiences. Your willingness to tell your stories helps make this newspaper what it is.
As I prepare to leave this role, I do so with a tremendous sense of gratitude. Thank you for allowing me to spend nearly nine years doing work that I truly loved. It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve as your editor, and I will always be grateful for the trust you placed in me.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Sarah Richardson
