Lewisburg-Shirley Elizabeth Davis Gagliano, 84, died Thursday, June 4, 2015.
Shirley was born on Apr. 22, 1931, in Scranton, PA, and was married to Vincent J. Gagliano, who preceded her in death, for 54 years. Shirley was the only child of Margaret and Theodore Davis.
She grew up in Scranton, PA and Brooklyn, NY. Following high school she attended Long Island University and subsequently received two Masters Degrees from Adelphi University, in Garden City, NY.
In addition to being a loving wife and devoted mother, Shirley was a gifted early childhood educator who taught for over 20 years in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, in New York. Shirley treasured music, theatre and people. She was spirited, courageous and enjoyed being with friends and celebrating holidays. Above all she loved her family and had a deep and inspiring faith.
Shirley is survived by: her three children, daughter, Dona D. Young and husband Roland of White Sulphur Springs and Cincinnati, OH, daughter, Daryl D. Gagliano of Colorado Springs, CO and son, Drew D. Gagliano and wife Ying Lin of Washington, DC; five grandchildren, Rev. Meghan D, Young of Middletown, CT, Wesley D. Young of Beckley and Taylor D. Young of White Sulphur Springs and Avery and Aniah Gagliano of Washington, DC.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Dawn Davis Gagliano.
Although an only child, Shirley was blessed through marriage with wonderful sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law many of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Angelo V. Gagliano and wife Joan and sister-in-law, Grace Federici; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Shirley touched lives through her capacity to inspire and bring out the best gifts and talents in others. She will be greatlv missed.
Shirley’s family extends a special thank you to the residents and staff of The Seasons who created a home and loving community for her over the last five years, as well as the friendship and assistance of Donna Wiekle. They also thank her church Community at Lewisburg United Methodist Church for their love and support.
Calling hours were Friday, June 5 at Lewisburg United Methodist Church before the funeral service. Burial was in Greenfield Cemetery in Hempstead, NY, on Saturday June 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations, may be made to Lewisburg United Methodist Church.
