With deep sorrow and abiding love, we announce the passing of Robert Alondo Hopkins Jr. – affectionately known as “Hop” or “Hoppy” – on June 10, 2025. A proud and lifelong resident of Alderson, WV, Hoppy was a cherished brother, father, uncle, cousin, and friend whose larger-than-life presence brought light, laughter, and love to all who knew him.
Born on Dec. 4, 1946, to Robert A. Hopkins, Sr. and Hattie C. Hopkins, Hoppy was one of two siblings and grew up in a family grounded in strong values, close bonds, and deep community roots. From an early age, his quick wit and magnetic personality made a lasting impression, and he had a remarkable way of making people feel seen, heard, and genuinely cared for.
Hoppy dedicated 28 years of service as a landscape foreman at Federal Prison Camp Alderson, where he was known not only for his exceptional skill and strong work ethic but also for his collegiality, warmth, and leadership. Even after retirement, he continued to nurture his passion for landscaping by offering his services and advice to local families throughout the community, beautifying yards and sharing his deep knowledge and care with neighbors near and far.
Beyond work, Hoppy lived life to the fullest. He had a passion for car shows, hunting, and fishing – and was never short on stories, jokes, and laughter to share. He poured his heart into his community, offering his time, talents, and love generously to family, friends, and neighbors alike.
Hoppy is survived by his daughter, Christina Hopkins; his beloved sister, Mildred “Mitty” Lewis; his devoted nephew, Davis “Davy” Lewis (married to Colette Lewis); his loving niece, Denise Lewis LaRosa (married to Jason LaRosa); grandsons, Dimitris Brookman (married to Heather Brookman) and Aydrien Jackson; granddaughter, Amelia Hopkins; great-granddaughter, Dalilah Brookman; great-nieces and nephews, Gianna LaRosa, Natalie LaRosa, Zayvion Lawson and Marion Lawson; and his special companion, Mary Viney. He is also remembered with love by a host of cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will carry his joyful spirit with them always.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert A. Hopkins, Sr. and Hattie C. Hopkins; the mother of his children, Patricia Hopkins; and his beloved son, Robert “Bobby” Hopkins.
To know Hoppy was to love him – and to laugh with him. His legacy lives on through the memories we share, the love he gave so freely, and the joy he brought into our lives.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 21, at the River of Life Church of God with Pastor Greg Scott officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 12 noon.
Alderson Funeral Services and Smathers Funeral Chapel are honored to have been entrusted to care for our great friend and neighbor, Hoppy. Online condolences are encouraged at www.smathersfun
