After a letter of resignation was presented by Rainelle Mayor Jason Smith last week, Town Council voted to approve his resignation on Monday, November 3. In his place, Town Recorder Bill Bell will serve as the acting mayor.
Pointing to the state and town codes, the council’s next step is to decide who will serve as mayor through to the next election. Council approved Bell to serve in the meantime.
“Our code reads that [the vacancy] is to be filled by the recorder until someone is appointed or qualified and we are currently working on that,” Bell said.
Councilmember John Wyatt read Smith’s resignation aloud before the meeting was adjourned.
