On Monday, Apr. 6, at approximately 11:57 p.m., three deputies from the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Greenbrier West High School.

While checking the area, deputies heard additional gunshots coming from a wooded area west of the campus and moved in that direction. As they approached, they observed a light moving through the woods and made contact with a single individual. Deputies issued verbal commands to the subject.

The subject immediately raised a pistol and fired at the deputies. The deputies returned fire, striking the individual. Deputies then secured the weapon and began lifesaving measures while requesting EMS assistance. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Fire and EMS personnel responded, and the subject was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment.

Although the incident occurred near Greenbrier West High School, it was not related to the school. There is no threat to students, staff, or the campus.

The West Virginia State Police will conduct the investigation. Additional information will be released upon its completion.

Sheriff Baker stated, “I commend these deputies for their courage and professionalism during this incident. They acted exactly as they were trained. I also extend my thanks to the Rainelle Volunteer Fire Department, Quinwood Volunteer Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs EMS, and AirEvac for their rapid response and assistance in transporting the subject to a trauma center. Additionally, I appreciate the Greenbrier County 911 dispatchers for their prompt coordination, as well as the support from the Lewisburg Police Department, Ronceverte Police Department, White Sulphur Police Department, and the West Virginia State Police.”
