Delve into your imagination this winter in a class for aspiring and practicing writers at New River Community and Technical College. The Writing Short Stories class taught by author Belinda Anderson starts Feb. 5.

No need to worry about gathering snow boots and gloves to attend because the class will be offered by conference call.

The three-week writing class meets at 10 a.m. on Saturdays through an audio-only conference call. The class can be accessed either through an internet conference call connection or by landline telephone – high-speed internet is not required. The hour-long conference calls will include lecture, with time for questions and participant sharing, and group e-mail follow-up as needed. Participants can create new work or apply the concepts to existing projects. The workshop is open both to new and experienced writers.

“Writing short stories is the perfect way to learn the building blocks of writing both fiction and nonfiction, and to sharpen your skills if you’re working on longer projects,” Anderson said. “You’re practicing how to quickly draw a reader’s attention and keep it. It’s fun for both the writer and the reader.”

“Short stories literally put me on the map,” Anderson said. She is one of the authors selected for The Literary Map of West Virginia, published by Fairmont State University. She is listed on the map for her collections of short stories, published by Mountain State Press. Since that recognition, she also has published a middle-grade novel.

Tuition for the class is $75, and the registration deadline is Jan. 19. Participants will be emailed the conference call number and access codes after registering for the class.

Visit www.newriver.edu/community for information on upcoming classes or register for the course or contact Gloria Kincaid (304-793-6101, gkincaid@newriver.edu).
