Basketball teams and fans from across southern West Virginia will have a new tournament to add to their schedule during the 2018-2019 season and beyond.

The New River Community and Technical College Foundation will host the New River CTC Shootout at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center on Jan. 2, 2019. Eight regional high school and middle school basketball teams have already committed to add the event to their upcoming schedule.

“We’re giving many high school and middle school teams an opportunity to play in the convention center, an opportunity that they may not have otherwise,” said New River CTC Foundation Executive Director Michael Green.

Greenbrier East High School, Greater Beckley Christian School, James Monroe High School, Peterstown Middle School, Pocahontas County High School, Shady Spring High School, Shady Spring Middle School and Westside High School are scheduled to compete in the inaugural event in January.

“This tournament will be an enjoyable way for students, parents and school administrators to learn more about New River CTC and our affordable tuition. Many of our freshman students decide to attend New River CTC in order to obtain their core classes prior to transferring to a four-year institution.  This is a win-win situation for the students and their parents,” Green added.

New River CTC offers more than 60 degree and certificate programs along with workforce training. Classes are offered at locations in Beaver, Ghent, Lewisburg, Marlinton, Princeton and Summersville as well as online. The college has transfer agreements in place with many area four-year institutions to make it easier for students to transfer.

All of the proceeds from the tournament will go toward funding scholarships for New River CTC students. The New River CTC Foundation awards more than $100,000 in college scholarships each year.
