Lewisburg-Mary Elizabeth Nickell Richmond, 90, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at Seasons Place in Lewisburg.

Born on July 11, 1932, in Fort Spring, WV, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Wirt Nickell and Stella Ruth Longanacre Nickell Young.

Mary Liz graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1949.  She then continued her education by attending Charleston Business School in Charleston, WV. She retired from Greenbrier Board of Education where she was a secretary at Lewisburg Intermediate School. Her hobbies included sewing, cross-stitch needlepoint, photography, traveling, and camping with her family and friends.

Mary Liz was an inspiration to many for her strength and grace. Important to her were her faith, family, and friends. She was a long-time member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church. She enjoyed participating in Sunday School, Bible Study, women’s church circle, and was a former children’s Sunday School teacher. Mary Liz loved her family.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-in-law. Mary Liz will be remembered for her thoughtfulness and kindness. She was known for always sending cards and letters to those that she cared about. She was also a member of Progressive CEOS and PEO Chapter F.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by husband of 69 years, John Quincy Adams Richmond, Jr.; an infant son, John Michael Richmond; a great-grandson, Henry Quick; her brother, Joe Young; and brothers-in-law, Arthur Richmond and Donald Richmond.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy R. Quick and husband Mike of Lewisburg; son, David Richmond and wife Mary of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Heather Quick Hancock and husband Rich of Radford, VA, Chris Quick and wife Julianna of Lewisburg, and Kevin Quick of Lewisburg; step-grandchildren, Camy Geide and husband Mike of Vienna, VA, and Byron Spivey of Jacksonville, FL; great-granddaughter, Nora Quick and step-great-grandchildren, Bryce, Jocelyn, and Zander Spivey, Bria and Silas Geide; and sisters, Betty Ann Johnson of Talcott, Katie Rolen (Raymond) of St. Charles, MO, Barbara Woods of Braselton, GA; brother-in-law, Jack Richmond of Roanoke, VA; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Richmond of Lewisburg and Catherine Richmond of Greensboro, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Seasons Place and Hospice Family Care for the loving care given to our mother.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Lewisburg United Methodist Church. Service was officiated by Rev. Bev Colombo and assisted by Toni Hughes. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy should be made to Lewisburg United Methodist Church or Hospice Family Care.
