Members of the Lewisburg High School Alumni Association have established a scholarship fund with the Greater Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation (GVCF) in honor of their alma mater. The fund will help provide educational opportunities in perpetuity to students who reside in the service area of the former Lewisburg High School.

The award will be granted to a graduating senior from Greenbrier East High School who will be attending the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College. The student must be involved in extra-curricular activities at the high school or in the community and show evidence of leadership or responsibility. Also, the student must demonstrate the potential to succeed in college as evidenced through his or her goals, grades, and/or test scores. The scholarship will be available beginning with the class of 2014.  Applications will be part of the Greenbrier County Scholarship program. Every senior at GEHS will receive a copy of the application packet from their guidance counselor. Applications may also be downloaded at www.gvfoundation.org.

The money to establish the fund was raised at a recent reunion. Lewisburg High School Alumni Association board members and 2013 All School Reunion chairs Joan Montgomery and Shelby Mengel expressed how pleased they were that so many LHS alumni came back for the reunion to relive the sense of community and camaraderie that existed when the school was open. They praised the high level of education that they received at LHS. “We had highly educated, wonderful teachers,” Montgomery stated. In particular, she fondly remembered English and French teacher Nancy Messer who used to say “if you have time to talk, you have time to learn.”

The scholarship fund and selection process is administered by the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation. GVCF was established in 1999 to ensure that the region remains an enriching environment where individuals and organizations have the resources needed to continue their vital work. It currently has over $5.3 million in assets. Over the past 13 years, the foundation has distributed over $1.8 million to the community. GVCF is comprised of a collection of 102 funds, each with a separate agreement, donors and philanthropic purpose. When appropriate, each fund makes an annual grant to the community.
