Lewisburg-Karen Alfreda Fankhauser died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023 in Lewisburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Milton Hawkins and stepson, Eric Hawkins.

She was a graduate of the B.M. Spurr School of Nursing, received her undergraduate from Wheeling Jesuit University, and graduate degrees from University of Virginia.  She was elected to Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. After receiving her doctoral degree, she worked in the University of Virginia Health System. Upon retirement, she served on the Board of the Greenbrier Historical Society, was active in Shepherd’s Center of the Greenbrier Valley and the Bluebell Garden Club.

Survivors include son, Kirk Fankhauser West; grandchildren, Mariann Hefner, Shae Anne West; and two great-grandchildren, Zachery and Lucas.

Memorial donations may be given to: Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, 225 Jeanette Lancaster Way, Charlottesville, VA 22903-3388.
