Jack Hermon Coats

Alvon-Jack Hermon Coats, 75, died Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2014, at the Brian Center in Low Moor, VA, after an extended illness.

Born Apr. 10, 1938, in Newberry, SC, he was a son of the late James Felton and Mildred Ryles Coats.

Jack was a member of the Alvon United Methodist Church and he honorably served in the National Guard. He was a retired houseman at The Greenbrier. Jack loved to fish and was an avid New York Yankees Team fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Norma Colleene Coats on Apr. 18, 2013; three brothers and two sisters, James Coats, Carl Coats, Clyde Coats, Elizabeth Jones and Ruby Hughes.

Survivors include: his children, Mrs. Sonya Jean Mitchell of Mississippi, Neva Michelle Coats at home, Jack Kevin Coats (Elizabeth) of Alvon, Kenneth Coats (Tammy) of Alvon, Kyle Coats of Pearisburg, VA and Carlton Coats of Covington, VA; two brothers, Billy Mac Coats of Batesburg, SC and Dewey Coats of West Columbia, SC; sister, Margaret Sheppard of Newberry, SC; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

His funeral service was conducted Sunday, Mar. 22 at the Alvon United Methodist Church, Alvon, where Rev. Buck Caldwell and Rev. Bobby McClintic officiated.

Interment was in Mapledale Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

Visitation was at the church before the service.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Diabetes Fund or American Heart Association.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs is serving the family.
