Last week was warm and sunny as the Houston Texans held one of their 15 practice scrimmages open to the public at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center at The Greenbrier resort.

Spectator turnout was high, with a mix of local residents and Texan fans who were curious to catch a glimpse of the spectacular beauty that makes The Greenbrier a famous world class resort.

During the scrimmage, fans were cheering loudly as the Texans were playing offense and defense against each other in preparation for their practice game against the New England Patriots on Aug. 15. Earlier, on Aug. 8, the Texans traveled to Charlottesville, NC, for a battle with the Carolina Panthers.

Franklin Weller, a resident from Covington, VA, shared his thoughts about the action he witnessed at the center.

“This is absolutely amazing. I never thought I would see the day that the NFL would come to The Greenbrier,” Weller said. “I mean, you the see them play on TV, but not up close and personal where I live. Even if this is training for them, I’m happy to see them in person.”

Fans of the Houston Texans allowed their children get autographs and pictures of their favorite players. Tyler Ervin, a running back and number 34 for the Texans, said these practices are something he enjoys doing for the kids as a football player.

“I love the kids, and I love football. It’s a great atmosphere,” Ervin said. “Playing away from Houston and being at The Greenbrier is something special that gives me and the team the time we need to train and get our minds right.”

After their practice scrimmage was over, Michael Mohamed, player number 54 and a linebacker with the Houston Texans, gave his opinion on how he felt about training at The Greenbrier.

“This has been one of the most challenging and demanding training sessions, and it has been fun,” Mohamed said. “The biggest thing I’ve seen while here is the nice environment, and I love training here. It’s wonderful.”

The Texans have trained at the performance center for roughly two weeks, and will depart for Houston on Aug. 18 to begin the new football season.

The Houston Texans will likely return to the Greenbrier Resort in the summer of 2018.
