Sissy McLaughlin of Hillsboro, a member of the Greenbrier Artists and the Pocahontas County Artists Guild, has been teaching a weekly art class for elementary students in Pocahontas County. Because of budget constraints, the students have been using art supplies donated by other artists, teachers, and copy paper from the school for their drawings. When Pocahontas County Art Guild President Cela Allison brought this to the attention of the Greenbrier Artists, they decided to purchase 55 sketchbooks for the students to use to encourage their interest in drawing and sketching.

Greenbrier Artists President Jeanne Brenneman ordered the supplies from Joe Miller “Cheap Joe’s Art Supply” in Boone, NC, with an explanation of how the sketchbooks would be used. Cheap Joe’s discounted the supplies and also donated 55 pencil packs for the students.

Artist McLaughlin would like to thank the members of both art groups, the school, community members, and Cheap Joe’s for their continuing support to enhance the children’s’ art experience.

Greenbrier Artists is a nonprofit group dedicated to the education and promotion of art. The group is comprised of more than 90 area artists who work in watercolors, pastels, oils, acrylics, fabric, and mixed media. They meet each Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Kellar Studio in Carnegie Hall to paint. Anyone interested is invited to join the group.
