Golf Team competes in WV Golf Association Challenge

All 12 players on the Greenbrier East High School Golf Team competed against ten other high school teams in the WV Golf Association High School Challenge at the Lewisburg Elk’s Course on Friday, Aug. 9. Teams consisted of four players each counting the three low scores as a total score.
GEHS had all 12 players competing, making up three teams. The $90 entry fee per team benefits the local J.J. O’Brien Scholarship fund that gives a $5,000 scholarship to a graduating Greenbrier East senior each year.
Scott High School team “A” finished first with a total of 223, Roane County finished second with a total of 224, and Poca finished third with a total of 229. Caleb Moore of Roane County and Travis Covert of Poca were co-medalists with a 72 on the par 70-course.
GEHS team “C’ finished 4th with a total of 240 (Individual scores: Madison Erskine -79, Griffin King-78, Jacob White- 93 and Cameron Sherwood-83).
GEHS team “A” finished 5th with a total of 252 (Walker Dent-77, Luke Hanna-97, Thomas Willis-78 and Karee Diem-136).
GEHS team “B” finished 6th with a total of 254 (Owen Wood-76, Logan Scott-75, Lindsey Ray-103 and Tyler Totten (who had to withdraw after being hit in the hand by a golf ball).
Coach Terry Koon graduated from Nicholas County High School in 1965 and was on their high school’s first golf team his senior year along with Nicholas Coach Joe Dooley as a junior. Coach Terry Koon has been the GEHS Golf Coach for four years and Coach Joe Dooley has been the Golf Coach it NCHS for 42 years. The golf community is truly a small community!
GEHS Gold Golf Team places first against Wyoming East
The GEHS Golf team played a match on Aug. 12 at the Lewisburg Elk’s Club for 18 holes on the par 70 course against Wyoming East. The gold team and the green team, consisting of four players each played against two teams from Wyoming East. The lowest three scores were counted. Logan Scott attempted to play, but had to withdraw due to a back injury. Team members Karee Diem, Cameron Sherwood and Thomas Willis were unable to play due to WV State Fair obligations.
Walker Dent of GEHS and Brett Laxton were Co-Medalists with 70.
GEHS Gold Team finished 1st with a total of 223.  Individual scores were Walker Dent-70, Madison Erskine-72, Owen Wood-81 and Griffin King-88. Wyoming East “A” Team finished 2nd with a total of 227: Brett Laxton-70, Dakota Hood-76, Kirby Campbell-81 and Seth Bailey-84. GEHS Green Team finished 3rd with a total of 257: Luke Hanna-89, Tyler Totten-99, Lindsey Ray-99 and Jacob White-101. Wyoming East “B” Team finished 4th with a total of 259: Logan Cook-85, Bryce Staton-87 and Chase Presley-87.
On Aug. 13, the GEHS Gold Golf Team played 18 holes at The Raven par 72 Course at Snowshoe against three other schools. Western Greenbrier finished 1st with a three lowest score total of 242: Chandler Fitzwater-77 (Medalist),  Justin Estep-80, Austin Ranson-85 and Jared Jennings-88. GEHS finished 2nd with a total of 253: Walker Dent-82, Madison Erskine-85, Owen Wood-86 and Tyler Totten-92. Richwood was 3rd with 269: Mason Mullens-87, Braiden Johnson-87, Tyler Davis-95 and Charlie Baughman-100. Nicholas County finished 4th with 280: Jason Truman-91, Sherwin Miller-92, Drew Ward-97 and Travis Miller-103.
