Greenbrier Episcopal School (GES) announces three winners in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Essay and Art Contest, held each year to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Indigo Graves won First Place in the Fourth Grade Essay Competition, Willow Ferguson won third place in the Fifth Grade Essay Competition and Mackenzie Bailey won second place in the art contest.

Students were judged on originality, grammar, relevancy to the theme, and creative expression. “The fact that the GES student body was represented in each category makes us proud beyond words,” Headmaster Gretchen Graves said. “Our students work hard and it shows.”

Fourth and Fifth Grade students from Greenbrier and Monroe County were asked to participate. More than 100 students submitted entries into the contest. Additional winners include; Fifth Graders Caroline Light and Savanna Smith, both from Lewisburg Elementary; Fourth graders Gavin Brown and Jason Ream of Lewisburg Elementary; Art Contest Winners Timothy Dalton of Rainelle and Abby Reel of Crichton.

Greenbrier Episcopal School students celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day “on,” Graves said. “We celebrate with a day on because we feel like it is very important for our students to participate and be a part of the civil rights movement happening here in our local community.”
