Gerald Thomas Campbell Sr., 84, of White Sulphur Springs passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on Feb. 9, 1940, in White Sulphur Springs, he was the son of the late Lewis Thomas and Myrtle Marie Meddins Campbell.
Gerald had a rich life filled with varied interests and dedication to his family and community. He found joy in gardening, nurturing fruit trees, and spending time in his greenhouse. His great-granddaughters brought him immense happiness, and he cherished the time he spent baby-sitting them. Gerald was also an avid traveler and enjoyed deer hunting. One of his simple pleasures was having breakfast at Hardees.
Gerald was actively involved in his community and church. He was a former member of the Wild Meadow Baptist Church and a current member of the Alvon Living Word Church. His sense of service extended beyond his immediate community; he volunteered in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, participating in clean-up and rebuilding efforts. Additionally, he volunteered with the Mennonite Disaster Team, rebuilding his granddaughter’s home after the 2016 flood. Demonstrating his dedication to family, he remodeled his parents’ home with his son for his daughter and her family.
Gerald was a dedicated employee of The Greenbrier, where he served for 44 years in the Engineering Department. His expertise and reliability earned him government clearance to work in the bunker. Beyond his work at The Greenbrier, he also co-owned S & C Seamless Gutter with Frank Stone, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his stepmother, Willie Campbell; his brother, Paul Campbell; his sisters, Zella Wade and Mary Gallagher; and his former son-in-law, Paul Moya.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis Gray Clendenen Campbell. He leaves behind his children, Gerald Campbell Jr. (Kim) and Teresa Campbell Lowe (Kenny); his grandchildren, John Campbell, Zondra Campbell, McKenzie Moya (Cody), Joe Lowe (Alyssa), and James Lowe; and his great-grandchildren, Zevin Campbell, Lydia Gwinn, and Magnolia O’Dell. He is also survived by sixteen step-great-grandchildren, his sisters-in-law, Rosa Bennett (Wade), Hazel Pinnell, and Okell Camp; his brother-in-law, Carl Wade; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his community, and his myriad of interests that brought joy to his life and those around him. His legacy of service, both in his professional career and volunteer efforts, stands as a testament to the life of a man who gave generously of himself to better the lives of others. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at the Morgan Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Greg Scott and Pastor Buck Caldwell officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, at the funeral home. Burial will be private following the service in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens.
