The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has released the fifth edition of its State of the Environment Report.

The report, issued every three years, highlights data and trends pertaining to West Virginia’s environment. It continues the long-term process of identifying and tracking changes in the environment that result from human activities. The report also provides a basis for determining the success of regulatory and non-regulatory efforts designed to improve environmental quality.

Divided into four sections – air, water, land and energy – the report examines environmental aspects such as reported emissions of toxic air pollutants into the atmosphere; West Virginia’s aquatic integrity; hazardous and solid waste generation; abandoned mine lands reclamation; and natural gas development.

The State of the Environment Report is available online at www.dep.wv.gov. Click on “Public Information Office” under “Inside DEP” on the agency’s homepage. A limited number of hard copies will be printed in January and made available at the agency’s headquarters at 601 57th St. S.E. in Charleston. Written requests for hard copies should be mailed to the Public Information Office at the same address, using zip code 25304, or can be made by calling 304-926-0499, ext. 1338.
