As part of its ongoing commitment to combat elder abuse, the Family Refuge Center (FRC) announces its fourth annual Elder Abuse Awareness Walk, scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 12 at the CAMC Greenbrier Valley Hospital Track. This event aims to raise awareness and promote prevention strategies to address the alarming issue of elder abuse within our communities.
Elder abuse affects a significant portion of older adults across the nation, with estimates suggesting that 1 in 10 older Americans experience some form of abuse, neglect, or exploitation each year. However, the true extent of this issue may be even greater, as many cases of elder abuse remain unreported.
“The Family Refuge Center recognizes the urgent need to address elder abuse and provide support to those affected,” says the Abuse in Later Life Advocate at FRC. “Our Annual Awareness Walk serves as a platform to educate the public about the signs of elder abuse and empower individuals to take action to prevent it.”
This year’s event will feature a special challenge, inviting participants to form teams of five and compete for the most laps walked. Registration for teams is open to all members of the community, with a minimal fee of $25 for a team of five. The team with the most laps walked will be awarded a prize. Don’t worry if you don’t have a team, the walk is open to everyone!
Registration begins at 11 a.m., and the walk starts at 12 noon and ends at 2 p.m. To register your team, please contact the Family Refuge Center at 304-645-6324.
We encourage everyone to join us for this meaningful event, dressed in purple. Together, we can raise awareness, foster community support, and work towards ending elder abuse. In addition to the walk, there will be resource booths, lunch, and refreshments. Providing attendees with an opportunity to learn more about elder abuse prevention efforts and connecting with local support services.
