This PSA is to inform the voters of a ballot initiative which will see on your ballots when you vote on November 5, 2024. “Amendment No 1” stems from a bill which passed in your Legislature during the Regular Legislative Session earlier this year. That Bill was essentially a vote to determine if the issue of Euthanasia (Medically Assisted Suicide) would appear on the 2024 General Election, or not. The Bill passed and therefore the issue will be put before you, the voters, to decide.

So, what is it that you will decide? Currently Euthanasia IS already illegal within the State of West Virginia and this ballot initiative will not change the current status. Amendment No. 1, if passed in November, will strengthen the current State Law, moreover, enshrine it within, our State Constitution thereby making it far more difficult for any State Legislature to repeal the current law in the future.  The intent of this initiative is to ensure that physicians are not enriching themselves by providing a pre-mature death to individuals who may not be in a healthy and sein state of mind due to their current mental or physical circumstances.

The wording you will see on your ballot will say: “Amendment No. 1: Protection of Persons Against Medically Assisted Suicide. Summary of Purpose: The purpose of this amendment is to protect West Virginians against medically assisted suicide. Instructions to Voters: To vote in favor of the Amendment submitted, make a selection next to “FOR.” To vote against the Amendment, make a selection next to ‘AGAINST’.”So…

If you DO want to enshrine the current law (which bans medically assisted suicide in WV) into our State Constitution…check the “FOR” box.

If you DO NOT want to enshrine the current law into our State Constitution…check the “AGAINST” box.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at:  Todd.Longanacre@wvhouse.gov

May God bless you and your families.

Please remember your civic duty and go vote on November 5th.

Delegate Todd Longanacre

Member, WV House of Delegates, District 47
