Alzheimer’s & Dementia University coming to Greenbrier County

The Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter will present Alzheimer’s & Dementia University for Families & Professionals on Friday, May 1 at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. Alzheimer’s & Dementia University for Families & Professionals is a one-day conference for family caregivers and healthcare professionals offering continuing education credits for physicians, social work, and nursing.

“As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, care partners become hands-on caregivers,” said Laurel Kirksey, Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter executive director. “Alzheimer’s & Dementia University gives care partners the tools and resources to provide the best care possible throughout each stage of the disease.”

Topics covered at the conference will include the basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia, improving communication strategies, recommendations for legal and financial safety and security, and tips for working with your healthcare provider. Speakers include: Dr. Debra Lilly, Ph.D., Community Living Center/Palliative/Hospice Care psychologist and Beckley Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center provider; Dr. William C. Boyd, D.O., C.M.D., medical director Community Living Center and Beckley VA Medical Center provider; Darlene A. Boyd, RN-C, certified geriatric nurse and lead clinical care coordinator at the Beckley VA Medical Center; and, Catherine D. McConnell, J.D., West Virginia senior legal aid director and staff attorney.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
