Greenbelt, MD-Reverend Bobby Lee Wood, formerly of West Virginia, entered into the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, Mar. 15, 2019.
Born on Jan. 2, 1937, in Caldwell, he was preceded in death by his parents, Simon J.P. Wood and Mildred Hefner Wood; and his wife of 58 years, Ruby Mae Rhodes Wood.
He is survived by his sisters, Wanda Giles of Charleston, WV, and Betty Morgan of Ronceverte; and sons, Chuck (Janice) Wood of Greenbelt, MD and Rev. Mark (Sherry) Wood of Spencer; and his daughters, Lori (John) Meadows of Lynchburg, VA and Lisa (Randy) Williamson of Friendly, WV; eight grandchildren, Sydney, Nathaniel, Victoria (Adam), Jonathan, Jeremy (Shanna), Deidre, Amanda and Caitlin and eight great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
Bobby was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Argonaut as a Petty Officer 2nd class beginning in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was licensed to preach in 1963 by the First Baptist Church of Dunbar under the ministry of Rev. George R. Pauley. He was ordained into the gospel ministry in 1966 at the First Baptist Church of Chesapeake and served as pastor to churches in Chesapeake, Huntington, Raleigh, NC, Montgomery, Sistersville and Lynchburg, VA. He also served as an Area Minister for the West Virginia Baptist Convention from 1988-1997 and while in this position, founded the School of Christian Studies and served as mentor to many pastors in the state. In his retirement, he taught many Bible studies and workshops throughout West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.
Visitation was held Monday, Mar. 18, at The Parchment Valley Conference Center, Matherly Room, in Ripley, and Tuesday, Mar. 19, at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
A Celebration of Bobby’s life was held Wednesday, Mar. 20, at the Morgan Funeral Home Chapel, Lewisburg. Family also received guests an hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Officiating the service were long-time friends, Dr. James Lutz, Dr. Lloyd Hamblin and Dr. Mike Sisson, executive minister of the West Virginia Baptist Convention.
In lieu of flowers, Bobby requested donations be made to the Pastors Emergency Fund, c/o West Virginia Baptist Convention, P.O. Box 1019, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
