White Sulphur Springs-Joseph Sylvester Terry, 68, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Charleston Area Medical Center after a short illness.
Born Dec. 31, 1947, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Clarence Sylvester and Elsie Jane Black Terry.
Joseph was enrolled in the army reserves from 1966 to 1972, and worked in the coal mines in Welch. He then did construction and machinery work from 1970 to 1994 and he retired from Mead Westvaco Corporation in Covington, VA, after 18 years of service.
He loved to hunt, fish and ride motorcycles and dirt bikes. Joseph loved being with his family and friends, spending time with his son and grandchildren. He was a very hard working man appearing tough on the outside but kind hearted on the inside. Joe will be missed by many and loved more than words can say.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Mary Jane Johnson; brother, Cody Terry; and great-nephew, Patrick Phillips, Jr.
Survivors include: his son, Joseph Terry, Sr. of White Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Joseph Terry, Jr., Savannah Terry, Elijah and Matthew Shennan and Byron Brewster; and step-daughter, Jessica Sherman; and numerous cousins. Also surviving are some very special people in his life, Dreama McCreery of Lewisburg, Vada Nelson Waid of White Sulphur Springs, and many others as well.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 3, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs, where Rev. Charles Feury officiated. Burial was in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.
Visitation was at the funeral home before the service.
