In August of 2017, an anonymous donor contributed $10,000 to the White Sulphur Springs Police Department in order to secure a K-9 unit for the city police force.
Another citizen was willing to cover to costs of outfitting a police vehicle with the proper gear for the K-9. However, earlier this month, the city had to reject the offer, and Mayor Bruce Bowling issued the following statement:
“The donation we received was certainly generous and we greatly appreciate it, but at this time we cannot afford to cover the other expenses associated with having out own K-9 unit. In the future, we might have our own K-9 unit, but it’s not possible at this time due to budget constraints. We currently have an agreement with the sheriff’s department, and we use their K-9 unit when we need to.”
