Following a lawfully advertised and conducted public auction, the City of White Sulphur Springs is pleased to announce the completed sale of the former White Sulphur Springs High School, Junior High and Green Devil Civic Center.

The sale came about after much deliberation and with great consideration the sale would have upon the City and its residents. The Green Devil Civic Center Building Commission, City Council, and the Mayor have all approved this sale. The new owners are working with a local church, pee wee basketball and Wish Center groups who use the facility to ensure a smooth transition in the sale process.

The City received the property nearly three decades ago from the Greenbrier County Board of Education when junior high schools were consolidated. Since then, significant efforts have been made to maintain and use the facility for the public good despite the extensive costs involved for upkeep, utilities, and insurance.

The new owners of this historic facility have exciting plans to invest $3M into renovating and upgrading the buildings to be utilized as a hotel and events center. There are no motels or hotels in city limits and the City has a lack of lodging for visitors who may not stay at The Greenbrier. The renovation and restoration will bring in much needed revenue to the City in building permit fees, business and occupation taxes and an increased visitor foot traffic downtown.

The sale is consistent with the City’s Comprehensive Plan for future development and growth in the City. Along with the Barrel Company, a new wellness center and pool, streetscape and many other new businesses downtown, it is an exciting time to work and live in the Spa City!
