Fishing lures, a scrimshaw etched with the Perkins Farm, a doily made by Edward Perkin’s mother, and a wind spinning Mallard duck made by a cousin were all a part of the WV Extension lesson “Home Grown: Appalachian Crafts from the Past” presented by Cassandria Perkins at the club’s May meeting held at the Williamsburg Historical Foundation Museum.

This lesson explores Appalachian craft history and ways individuals can preserve and teach the next generation.   Members practiced weaving using materials readily available now – plarn (yarn made from plastic shopping bags) and paper plates. Items were used to make baskets.

The club will meet at the museum on June 11 beginning at noon. Shela McComsey will be presenting the lesson “The Art of Afternoon Tea.”

We are building and growing families and our communities by sharing our skills and experiences and learning new skills from the WVU extension service and each other. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.

For more information about CEOS please check the WVU Extension Family and Community Development website or call the county extension office at 304-647-7408.
