In March, April and May, The West Virginia Nonprofit Association is presenting programs to help nonprofit organizations measure program outcomes, meet their technology needs, and guard against fraud in the workplace.

The programs are open to both WVNPA member organizations and non-members.

On Apr. 3 and May 15, the WVNPA will host an in-person workshop with Dr. Robert H. Penna, author of The Nonprofit Outcomes Toolbox.

During each day-long workshop, Dr. Penna will help nonprofit participants gain access to the basic information they need to be able to compete in the evolving results-based grants marketplace. Workshop participants will learn how an “outcomes approach” differs from more traditional, comfortable, and familiar approaches the nonprofit sector has employed in the past and gain hands-on practice developing outcomes statements and developing outcome indicators for their programs.

The Apr. 3 workshop takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Wells Inn, in Sistersville. The May 15 workshop takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flatwoods Conference Center in Sutton.

WVNPA member registration is $75. Non-member registration is $125. All participants will receive a copy of Dr. Penna’s book, The Nonprofit Outcomes Toolbox, a retail value of $70.

Dr. Penna serves on the advisory board of Charity Navigator and works with the organization as a consultant on grants and performance measures, as its International Coordinator responsible for the development of Charity Navigator’s activities beyond the borders of the United States. He is also the outcomes consultant for the Geneva-based World Scout Bureau.

Dr. Penna’s previous work includes consulting with The Rensselaerville Institute, facilitating seminars at the Institute’s The Center for Outcomes and leading training sessions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as well as working on such projects as the Ohio Outcome Funding Community Development effort, projects for the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the National Geographic Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

On Mar. 18 at 3 p.m., the WVNPA presents a webinar on Technology in the Workplace with Computer Technology Instructor Tim Elliott. The one-hour webinar will help nonprofits large and small conduct a technology assessment to help them plan long- and short-term purchases that meet their technology needs.

Then, on Apr. 15 at 1 p.m., Dr. Richard Riley, Jr., Ph.D., CPA, CFE, is the guest webinar host for Preventing Fraud in the Nonprofit Workplace – Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination: An Overview. Dr. Riley will talk about those who commit fraud and why. During this one-hour webinar, Dr. Riley will address the detection, prevention and deterrence of fraud, as well as fraud-prevention policies that should be in place in every nonprofit.

Both webinars are free to WVNPA members. Nonmember registration is $30.

Registration information for each of these programs is available on the Program Calendar at wvnpa.org or by calling WVNPA Executive Director Laura Lee Haddad at 304-667-2248.

Membership in the WVNPA is open to all 501(c)3 West Virginia nonprofit organizations. The WVNPA seeks to strengthen nonprofit organizations individually and the sector as a whole, catalyzing innovation and fostering the collective voice of its members, who make up a valuable part of the state’s economic and community fabric.
