The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic will celebrate its fifth anniversary Sept. 17-18 at The Greenbrier’s Center Court at Creekside stadium. For the first time, the lineup of tennis professionals will include female competitors.
The schedule for Saturday, Sept. 17, will include a pair of singles matchups. Pete Sampras, The Greenbrier’s Tennis Professional Emeritus, will take on John McEnroe in one match, while Venus Williams will play Madison Keys in a women’s singles showdown.
On Sunday, Sept. 18, mixed doubles will be on the schedule, with those same four players taking to the HarTru surface. Teams will be announced at a later date.
“The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic has been a very popular event for us, and we’re really excited to include two topnotch female players this year,” said Terry Deremer, The Greenbrier Director of Tennis. “It’s going to be a fantastic two days of tennis that everybody will enjoy.”
A 14-time grand slam champion, Sampras has been The Greenbrier Tennis Professional Emeritus since 2014. The 44-year-old has won 64 career titles and was No. 1 at the end of the year for six consecutive years from 1993 through 1998. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.
McEnroe, who will be participating in The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic for the fourth time, is a seven-time grand slam winner, who is known for being one of the most colorful tennis stars in the game’s history. He won 77 career titles and became an International Tennis Hall of Famer in 1999. McEnroe currently serves as a commentator on tennis broadcasts around the world.
Williams is a former world No. 1 who is currently ranked No. 11. She has won seven grand slam titles and more than 700 professional singles matches. Widely considered one of the all time greats of women’s tennis, Williams has won four Olympic gold medals and has a successful design business, on top of her success on the tennis court.
Keys is a 21-year-old Illinois native, who is currently ranked No. 17 in the world in women’s tennis. She reached the semifinals of the 2015 Australian Open and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon that same year.
“All four players are extremely accomplished and will be a lot of fun for the fans to watch,” said Greenbrier Owner and Chairman Jim Justice. “The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic has been a huge success for us, and it’s just a part of our commitment to tennis and its place in The Greenbrier’s history.”
Tickets for The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic are currently available online. Tickets will be available to purchase at Will Call at the stadium during tonight’s Center Court Under the Lights match until 30 minutes after the match is complete.
Tickets will be $60 for upper level and $110 for lower level for Saturday’s two matches and $40 for upper level and $80 for lower level for Sunday’s match. Those who purchase by June 15 at noon can save money by taking advantage of the Buy Early & Save promotion. Saturday’s tickets will be discounted at $47.50 (upper) and $105 (lower) and Sunday’s tickets will be $35 (upper) and $75 (lower) during that special promotion.
Fans wanting to attend both days can take advantage of huge savings between now and June 15. Upper level tickets for both days will be $75, and lower level tickets $150.
