Sunflower winners announced

Six Members of the Lewisburg House and Garden Club judged sunflowers grown by 31 students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade at Lewisburg Elementary School on Sept. 26, for the annual Sunflower Contest sponsored by the Club.

Overall winner and Classroom winner in Mrs. Tipton’s Kindergarten Class was Kiana McClung with a 54” sunflower; Mrs. Johnson’s Kindergarten Class winner was Kaden Hall with a 37-1/2” sunflower; Kindergarten Mrs. Smith’s Class winner was Nathan Gracia with a 37” sunflower; Mrs. Gillespie’s First Class winner was a 43-1/2” sunflower entered by Elissa McGurre; Mrs. Holiday’s First Grade Overall Class winner MacKenna McClure entered a 14” sunflower; Olivia Gioia was Class winner with a 35” sunflower in Mrs. Nugen’s First grade Class; John Wade was runner-up in the contest and winner in Mrs. McCormick’s Second Grade Class with a 52” sunflower; Mrs. Smith’s Second Grade Class overall winner was Abbi Hanna with a 43-1/2” sunflower; Layla Pence was the Overall Class winner with a 45-1/2” sunflower in Mrs. Gray’s Third Grade; Mrs. Dolan’s Third Grade Class winner was Lantry McClung with a 49-1/2” sunflower; Caden Carver’s 35” sunflower won the Overall Class entry in Mrs. Morgan’s Third Grade; Lawson Hamilton’s 42” sunflower won the Overall Class entry in Mrs. Stover’s Fourth Grade; Ms. Holden’s Fourth Grade Class Overall winner was Adriana Garcia with a 44-1/2” sunflower; Adam Seams’ 41-1/2” sunflower was the Overall Class winner in Ms. Miller’s Fourth Grade; and Fifth Grade Lauren Heaster was the Overall Class winner with a 37” sunflower in Mrs. Rittenhouse’s Room; Mrs. White’s Fifth Grade Class Overall winner was Chris Heaster with a 35-1/2” sunflower and Brook Davis’ 45” sunflower was the Overall Class winner in Ms. Foster’s Room.

This ongoing project is part of the conservation program of the Lewisburg House and Garden Club to encourage the students to grow sunflowers to feed resident birds at their homes during the winter months. The Club also provides bird feeders and sunflower seeds at Lewisburg Elementary under the direction of Townley Hamilton, conservation chair.

 

Members assisting Hamilton with the Sunflower Contest were Pat Wingo, Peggy Brown, Pam Cutright, Brenda Jones and Suzanne Perilli Hancock.

She is congratulated by Townley Hamilton, conservation chairman for the Lewisburg House and Garden Club that sponsors the annual contest, and presented her with a book on resident birds of West Virginia and a $25 check for her achievement.
