Sunflower Contest held at Lewisburg Elementary for 56th year

The Lewisburg House and Garden Club has participated with the students of Lewisburg Elementary School since 1959 with a conservation project to introduce them to the care of the environment we live in including our landscape and wildlife.

The sunflower seed distribution to the students at Lewisburg Elementary School in May is to plant the seeds given to them in anticipation of the Sunflower Contest in September as well as to watch the sunflowers grow and produce many seeds for the birds during the winter months. The purpose of the project is to introduce the children to conservation, to compete with fellow students and enjoy the experience.

This year’s Class Winners were:

5th Grade – Ms. Foster -Adam Seam – 46” Sunflower;

5th Grade – Mrs. White – Adriana Garcia – 41” Sunflower;

5th Grade – Ms. White – Lawson Hamilton, IV – 57” Sunflower and Overall Winner;

4th Grade – Ms. Miller – Rylee Carver – 45” Sunflower;

4th Grade – Mrs, Stover – Gavin Pyne – 52” Sunflower;

4th Grade – Ms. Holden – Garron Wiseman – 37” Sunflower;

3rd Grade – Miss Sheppard – John Wade – 53” Sunflower;

3rd Grade – Mrs. Ritterhouse – Brooke Blankenship – 39” Sunflower;

3rd Grade – Mrs. Dolan – Abbi Hanna – 35 1/2” Sunflower;

3rd Grade – Ms. Morgan – Gavin Cherry – 27” Sunflower;

2nd Grade – Mrs. Grays – Gary Morgan – 25 1/4” Sunflower;

2nd Grade – Mrs. Nugen – Peyton Jackson – 47” Sunflower;

2nd grade – Mrs. McCormick – Josie Legg – 42” – Sunflower;

2nd Grade – Mrs. Ambler – Trinnity Lammon – 33 1/2” Sunflower;

1st Grade – Miss Hutchinson – Calti McCormick – 46 3/4” Sunflower;

1st Grade – Mrs. Crane – Madison Spenur – 4 1/4” Sunflower;

1st Grade – Mrs. Holliday – Nathan Garcia – 45 1/2” – Sunflower;

Kindergarten – Mrs. Hall – Grace Withrow – 40” Sunflower;

Kindergarten – Mrs, Tipton – Arwyn Waid – 35” Sunflower;

Pre-K – Mrs. Bush – Hannah Crane – 36 1/2” Sunflower;

Pre-K – Mrs. Polly Smith – Bella Legg – 30” Sunflower.

The Sunflower Contest was held at the Lewisburg Elementary School on Thursday, Sept. 24. Members of the club assisting President Hamilton with the measuring of the sunflowers were Polley Cunningham, Susan Harkness, Brenda Jones, Susan Ernst, Marit Withrow and Sue McKinney.

 

Top winners of Annual Sunflower Contest at Lewisburg Elementary: In a field of 43 participants, Gavin Pyne (left) was the winner in Mrs. Stover’s 4th Grade Class with his 52” sunflower entry; Townley Hamilton, Conservation Chair and President of Lewisburg House and Garden Club congratulated the top winners, Lawson Hamilton displays his winning entry of 57” for the 5th Grade in Ms. White’s Class and the overall winner of the School’s Sunflower Contest, and John Wade was runner-up with his 53” sunflower entry from Mrs. Sheppard’s 3d Grade Room.  President Hamilton also presented Lawson a book on the “Birds of West Virginia” and a check for $25 as an award for his achievement.  All students received certificates from the Club who participated in the Contest.
