Shirley Ann Matheny Case

Alleghany, VA-Shirley Ann Matheny Case, 96, passed peacefully at home in Alleghany, VA, on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023.

Shirley, better known as Granny Sam, was one of 13 children of parents, Samuel Robert Matheny and Mary Ethel McAllister Matheny.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Chester Case.

Surviving to cherish her memory are five children, Charlotte Ann Richter (James Kelly “Rick”), Lloyd Douglas “Doug” Case (Patricia Hicks “Trixie”), Patricia Sue “Pat” Braden (Bill), Cathy Jean Johnson (Lloyd), and Mary Louise Farina (Charles “Chuck”).

She was also a loving grandmother to ten grandchildren, Molly Elizabeth Braden Hayslett (Brad), William Seth Braden, Tori Taiyo Johnson (Brandy), Laura Kelly Richter, Tora Miyoko Johnson, Elizabeth Michelle Richter, Terra Washi Johnson, Tovah Grace Johnson, Kelly Ann Farina, and Erin Nicole Farina.

Granny Sam was also the proud great-grandmother to Abigail Rae Hayslett and Evan Braden Hayslett.

The family would like to acknowledge two special caregivers, Susan Hepler and Lorna Parkins.

Memorial gifts may be sent to ConnectionsPlus Healthcare and Hospice at 537 Main Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or Alleghany United Methodist Church in c/o Martha Terry at 327 E. Prospect St. Covington, VA 24426.

A family graveside service will be held at a later date.
