Ronceverte man charged in decades-old sexual assault

After decades of silence, a rape victim’s report leads to an arrest of a Greenbrier County man. Woodrow Martin Smith, 63, of Ronceverte, also known as Marty, was arrested after being accused in a rape case which occurred more than 30 years ago. Investigators said Smith was arrested around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 on three counts of Third-Degree Sexual Assault. The victim, who was underage at the time of the sexual assault, recently came forward and claimed that Smith had raped him.

Smith has admitted to the charges and he was released on $25,000 bond. Police said that they believe there are more victims in the case who have not come forward. If anyone has information or believes they are a victim, they are asked to contact the West Virginia State Police Lewisburg Detachment.
