The Robert C. Byrd Clinic (RCBC) is proud to announce the launch of the S.H.I.N.E. program (Sober Health Initiative-Elevate), a rural community health initiative designed to increase access to life-saving medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and comprehensive support for individuals battling Substance Use Disorder (SUD), Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), or Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).

The S.H.I.N.E. program is available to residents of Greenbrier and surrounding counties and offers a wide range of services to support recovery:

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment: FDA-approved medications for OUD are prescribed to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice.
  • Counseling Services: Both individual and group counseling sessions are offered.
  • Hepatitis C Testing and Treatment and Wound Care: Addressing associated health concerns.
  • Harm Reduction Efforts: Naloxone training and distribution, as well as fentanyl and xylazine test strip distribution, accompanied by educational materials.
  • Telehealth and In-Person Visits: Flexible care options tailored to patients’ needs.
  • Referrals to Support Services: Ensuring continued care and relapse prevention.

To provide this comprehensive care, RCBC collaborates with trusted community partners, including Seneca Health Services, Greenbrier Medical Arts Pharmacy, the Greenbrier County Health Department, and others. Patients retain the freedom to select their preferred behavioral health provider and pharmacy while participating in S.H.I.N.E.

Recognizing the importance of peer-to-peer support in the recovery journey, S.H.I.N.E. features Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSS) who offer mentorship, advocacy, and guidance based on lived experience. Through a partnership with CHESS Health, RCBC also provides patients with access to the Connections App—a robust digital platform offering 24/7 peer support, recovery resources, virtual meetings, and crisis assistance.

S.H.I.N.E. is dedicated to harm reduction efforts, providing free training and distribution of naloxone to reduce the risk of fatal overdoses, as well as fentanyl and xylazine test strips to empower safer decision-making.

“We want our community to know that recovery is possible, and that help is available no matter what stage of recovery someone is in,” said Tayler Hiser, Peer Recovery Support Specialist at RCBC. “Through the S.H.I.N.E. program, we aim to provide the tools, support, and hope necessary for individuals to reclaim their lives.”

If you or someone you know is interested in the S.H.I.N.E. program, please contact the Robert C. Byrd Clinic at 304-647-1209.

The Robert C. Byrd Clinic is a comprehensive not-for-profit Rural Health Clinic committed to providing outstanding healthcare to the residents of the Greenbrier Valley and surrounding counties. This clinic is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and has been recognized for organizational excellence by the West Virginia Rural Health Association.
