Raymond Gerald Surbaugh, Sr., 92, of Rainelle, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Apr. 10, 2025, after a long illness. He was born on Feb. 12, 1933, at Meadow Creek, the son of the late John Ezra and Mary Elizabeth (Bennett) Surbaugh. Raymond was the last surviving member of his family.

Raymond retired from General Motors where he worked as a mechanic. After that, he was bored, so he took up truck driving. He was a Korean War Army Veteran and served his country proudly. He was also an avid gardener, loved his dogs, and spent many hours hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Lewis Surbaugh; son Victor Wayne Surbaugh; daughters Janie Sue Phillips, and Gina Surbaugh and grandchildren Lanny and Tammy Phillips.

Those left to cherish the memories made with Raymond are his wife of 29 years, Margaret Dunford Surbaugh; son Raymond G. Surbaugh, Jr. (Pam), of Morganton, NC; daughters Rita K. Leighton (Michael) of Sanford, FL, and Elizabeth Ann Surbaugh of Dover, DE; brother Jackie Hume, of Oregon; step-daughters Cynthia Ann Lewis (John) of Sherwood, AR, Pamela Kay Dunford of Charleston; step-son Steven Lee Dunford (Paula) of Rupert; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends.

In keeping with Raymond’s wishes, he will be cremated.

Smathers Funeral Chapel is honored to have assisted with Raymond’s family during their great time of need. Online condolences are encouraged at www.smathersfuneralchapelinc.com
