
The Rainelle Public Library recently hosted its Summer Reading Program. Patrons ages 6 to 13 were welcomed by Debra Goddard, Rainelle Library Director.
Themes for the 3-week event included The World of Dinosaurs, Discovering Our Solar System and concluded with a Celebration of United States 250th Anniversary of Freedom.
Gary Johnson, an Army veteran of Rainelle was guest speaker. He explained how our freedom was accomplished and the value of freedom. “Men and women fought long and hard for our freedom,” Johnson said. He also talked about the establishment of the first 13 colonies. He demonstrated the proper way of folding the U.S. Flag. Those present were given an opportunity to learn the proper method of folding the flag and Johnson explained the individual meaning of each fold. “Each fold has a meaning,” Johnson said.
Others present and in costume were Margaret Golden as Abraham Lincoln. She spoke briefly on the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. George Washington, portrayed by Steve Shafer, led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and also singing The National Anthem. Sharon Johnson portrayed Uncle Sam. Sherry Phipps, library aide, was dressed as Betsy Ross.
