The Rural Health Clinic at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Christopher Lamps, MD, FAACAP to their medical staff. Dr. Lamps currently has a successful psychiatry practice, in its tenth year of operation, in Richmond, VA. Prior to establishing his own practice, Dr. Lamps worked as a Resident in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, AR. He received his Medical Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee in 1995.
Dr. Lamps will be providing psychiatric services to children, teens, and young adults at PMH once a month. “Psychiatry is a specialized service that is not always available in every community. Finding a psychiatrist that specializes in child and young adult services in a rural area is a privilege and we are honored that Dr. Lamps is joining our team,” says Robin Taylor, director of Primary Care in the Rural Health Clinic.
Dr. Lamps enjoys adaptive sports, including tennis, biking and skiing. He actually first came to Pocahontas County to learn how to mono-ski at Snowshoe Mountain. It was through a trip to Snowshoe that Dr. Lamps first encountered Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. A small accident saw Lamps bringing one of his children’s friends to our emergency department and striking up a conversation about psychiatry needs with the medical staff here. “This is a long time in the making,” he says smiling.
Dr. Lamps’s wife grew up in the mountains of Virginia and like those of us who live here, feel a pull to the mountains and enjoy spending as much time here as possible. Lamps chuckles as he says he is just as used to the flat land though, having spent time while growing up visiting family on their farm in Illinois. “I am excited to have a chance to get more connected with the community here in Pocahontas County and get involved in rural health care again. After my last visit to PMH, I was just filled with gratitude for this entire opportunity – for how friendly the people are at PMH and how beautiful the scenery is around Marlinton,” he says.
The RHC offers a full range of medical services including care for illness and chronic disease management, well child checks, immunizations, physical examinations, and women’s health services. The new option of psychiatry will indeed make a full plate of services.
The PMH Rural Health Clinic is open to all and located inside the hospital, which allows patients access to lab and x-ray services without having to go through the emergency department. You may make an appointment with Dr. Lamps for psychiatry services (or any of our other regular health care providers) by calling 304-799-6200. Registration for the clinic is at the front desk of the hospital.
