The Progressive CEOS met on Tuesday, May 13 at the residence of Patty Gray. President Gray called the meeting to order and welcomed members present.
The Minutes of last month’s meeting was read by Secretary Betty Jo McNeel and approved as read. The Treasurer’s report was given by Lynn Humphreys with a balance of $288.38.
Health Motivator tips were given by Lynn Humphreys on egg allergies, stating that most allergies are from the egg white.
Patty Gray reminded members that the short story and poetry contest is due in August.
The week of May 18-24, at the Ronceverte Public Library, the CEOS will be displaying boards pertaining to club activities, in hopes of getting new members to join the Community Educational Outreach Services (CEOS).
On July 23, members will meet at the Cadle Farm. There will be an auction and monies will be donated to West Virginia Helping Hands. Our club will create a basket of similar items with a Spa theme.
President Patty Gray presented the program on Mail Pouch Barns, with many interesting facts how the advertising campaign began in West Virginia. The “Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco, Treat Yourself to the Best” was first painted on a barn in Wheeling. Brothers Aaron and Samuel Bloch decided to hire a team of painters to travel rural roads around Wheeling and offer farmers between $2 and $20 to paint advertisements on the side of their barns to entice the public to start sapling Mail Pouch tobacco. By the time the program ended in 1992, thousands of barns across the country featured the Mail Pouch tobacco logo.
Harley Warrick and a partner traveled from town to town to paint barns. Warrick retired in 1992 and estimated that he had painted or retouched about 20,000 barns in his career. Today, approximately 2,000 barns are still standing. There is a Mail Pouch barn in Greenbrier County located on the Midland Trail off Route 60 near Lewisburg.
The door prize was won by Sally Holliday and it was special because it was her birthday.
The next CEOS meeting will be at the Greenbrier State Forest on June 10. Each member will bring their lunch.
