New River Community and Technical College (NRCTC) provides accessible, affordable, quality education and workforce programs to meet the needs of the region it serves. NRCTC serves Greenbrier County and eight additional adjacent counties. Next week, students go back to school with hopes of furthering their careers.

On Aug. 19, NRCTC welcomes future stylists to its Cosmetology and Esthetics programs. The Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) degree programs provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for an entry-level career in the cosmetology field.

The cosmetology specific program exceeds the 1,800 clock hours required by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Barbers and Licensing or Certification of Cosmetology Board. The program includes principles of hair care, hair color, salon operations and introduction to nail care.

The Esthetics program is a two-semester option available within the Cosmetology program. This program is specific to the care of skin and makeup. Esthetics involves a variety of techniques including facials, skin analyzing, makeup artistry, microdermabrasion, facial treatments and skin care regimens. The field also includes spa elements including wraps, polishes, aromatherapy, foot reflexology, waxing, eyebrow shaping and eyelash tinting.

Upon completing these programs, and meeting all eligibility requirements, students sit for exams administered by the appropriate state board.

The clinical portions of these programs include students practicing on people. For information about how the public may participate in the practicum process, call 304-647-6560.

NRCTC says the tuition is among the lowest in the state. In addition to tuition, some programs have additional student fees. NRCTC’s goal is to “help you finance your education through every available means – federal, state and local institutional finds; and our financial aid staff are able to advise and assist you.”

Please visit www.newriver.edu for information about financial aid or any specific program’s details.

The Cosmetology and Esthetics lab at New River Community and Technical College awaits the return of new and current students of the programs on Aug. 19.
