The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve released the following statement on Wednesday, Nov. 8:
Steep Valley Fire update: Currently the fire is estimated to be 800 acres and zero percent contained. The fire is within the park and there are no immediate threats at this time. Smoke is visible in much of the park today and visitors are advised to use caution while out recreating. At this time, the War Ridge Campground and the road leading beyond that area are currently closed.
Fire crews from New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, in addition to fire crews from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, White Mountain National Forest, Wayne National Forest, State of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Indiana Dunes National Park are responding to the fire.
The Steep Valley Fire started on the afternoon of Monday, November 6 in the War Ridge and Backus Mountain areas of the park.
