New River CTC announces new Heavy Equipment Operation programs to meet workforce demand

New River Community and Technical College has announced the addition of new Heavy Equipment Operation training programs to its growing list of workforce and academic offerings. These programs are designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled equipment operators in West Virginia’s construction, excavation, and site development industries.

The new programs include a Certificate of Applied Science (CAS), an Advanced Skill Set Certificate (ASSC), and a 15-week non-credit workforce training option, giving students multiple pathways to gain in-demand skills and launch high-wage careers.

The Heavy Equipment Operations CAS is a two-semester, 30-credit-hour program that provides comprehensive hands-on training in the operation of dozers, skid steers, mini excavators, and backhoes. Students will also complete essential coursework in equipment maintenance, site assessment, and safety practices that align with OSHA standards. As part of the program, students will receive Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training, further increasing their employability and meeting a critical industry need.

For those seeking a faster route to employment, the Advanced Skill Set Certificate (ASSC) is a one-semester, 16-credit-hour program offering the same high-quality hands-on equipment training and coursework, minus the CDL component. This option is ideal for individuals looking to enhance or refresh their skills in a short amount of time.

“This is a great opportunity for people interested in stepping into heavy equipment operations to learn safe standard operation procedures while gaining seat time to learn vital skills” said New River CTC Heavy Equipment Operations Instructor, Jimmy Lilly. “I encourage anyone that desires to learn a new skill set for a demanding trade to sign up”.

Additionally, New River CTC offers a 15-week, non-credit workforce training program in heavy equipment operations. This option is tailored for individuals seeking focused, career-ready training without pursuing a formal academic credential.

The Heavy Equipment Operation programs are scheduled to begin this fall. For more information or to apply, visit www.newriver.edu today.
