Nettie Lee Gunter, 83, of Riverside Rest went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, surrounded by her family at the Peyton Hospice House. She was born on June 11, 1942, to the late Okey and Winnie (Cook) McMillion at Glen Fork.
Nettie was a powerful mom and maw-maw raising not only her children, but just about everyone else’s too. She always loved having her family around her, the more the better. Maw-maw was a force not to be reckoned with over her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Joseph Gunter Sr., her husband of 54 years, sons Joseph Gunter Jr., David Gunter, two infant daughters, sisters Joann Vandall and Elsie McMillion, brothers Richard McMillion, Okey McMillion Jr., and son-in-law Silas R. Brown.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Karen Gunter (Billy Joe), son Ricky Gunter (Jane), grandchildren Regina Martin, Anita Richmond (Jeffrey), David Gunter, Jr. (Michelle), Rosco Gunter (Crystal), Jessica Gunter, Tamera Massey (Evan), Heather Richmond (Ricky), Tiffany Hall (Robbie), Angel Ward, Leroy Ward, Andrea Terry, 33 wonderful great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter Huntleigh Dawn due in February, sister Linda Wiker (Mike), brothers Jimmy McMillion (Linda), Charlie McMillion, and daughter-in-law Mary Gunter.
Funeral Services will be held at the River of Life Church of God on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Anthony Carter officiating. The family will receive neighbors and friends from 12 noon until the time of the service. Interment to follow at Stewart-Gunter Crossover Trails Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robbie Campbell, David Lilly, Jim McMillion, Jr., Larry Jarrells, Jr., Jamie Crowe, and Shannon Earhart.
The family is grateful for the care given by the staff at Peyton Hospice House and Alderson Fire Department EMS Staff Jessie Willis and Matt Butler.
Alderson Funeral Services and Smathers Funeral Chapel are honored to have been trusted to take care of Nettie and her family during their great time of need.
