By Brian Miluk, Greenbrier East High School Wrestling Coach

Miluks-MattersWe did it again. We broke our school record for the most points scored at the “Big Blue” Tournament in Christiansburg, VA. We also had more Place-Winners than any previous year. The tournament was highlighted by the success of Jasiel Kinder (2nd), Josiah Solak (2nd), Evan Roberts (4th), Logan Evans (6th) and Adam Zimmerman (8th). This tournament had MANY State and nationally ranked Wrestlers and we went toe to toe with a lot of them while beating a few. It was Fun! I am so proud of this team and the overall effort of every person affiliated with our program. A Special Congratulations goes to Josiah Solak who won the Jackie Toney Memorial Award. It is an award that goes to one of the top Wrestlers at the Big Blue Tournament (Over 30 Teams) who exemplifies the Class and Commitment needed to succeed on and off the mat. We are so blessed to have Josiah as a representative of our Wrestling program. His impact on our young Wrestlers will leave a long lasting impression. Along with the beautiful plaque, he also received a $1,000 scholarship that will go toward his College Education. That Award is BIG-TIME!

Speaking of Youth, there are so many new faces in the Wrestling room that need to be recognized. Competing and succeeding in their first year at the Varsity High School level so far this season are Garrett Byers, Cameron Zobrist, Jacob Hefner, Rhett Miller, Thomas Bostic, Levi Hobbs, Jacob Thomas, Josh Amos, Ethan Asbury, Aaron Davis, Walker Hager, Jordan Jones, Jerry Mann, Jacob Scott, Austin Hamilton, Leslie Campbell and Brent Miller. WOW! To me, that is very exciting to see each one of these Wrestlers win at the High School level. The future is bright for Greenbrier East Wrestling. Overall, we have won over 300 individual matches this season and we only have 3 seniors in the line-up.

TRIVIA: The top 4 Wrestlers at each weight class from our Region go to the State Championships. Can you name the 10 Teams in our Region?

Upcoming events and highlights:

We wrestle at Beckley on Thursday, Jan. 29 for the “Coal Country Challenge” Trophy at 6 p.m. We NEED to bring that Trophy back HOME!

We will wrestle Greenbrier West at HOME on Friday at 6 p.m. for the Greenbrier County Championship. The Middle School (E.G.M.S.) will wrestle first and the High School match will follow. It will be Senior Night. Please come out and pay tribute to Katie Ervin, Evan Roberts, Adam Zimmerman and Josiah Solak. You will also witness over 15 State ranked Wrestlers and a few State Champions. WOW!

We will host the Coalfield Conference Invitational again this year at EGMS on Feb. 6 and 7. We are in need of sponsors. Please contact me to show your support!

EGMS UPDATE: Congratulations to Liam Lusher and Jordan Williams for winning the Coalfield Conference Championship. We had 5 Wrestlers in the finals. Zach Mullins, Jacob Smith and Jaylon Battaile finished in second.

MILUK HUMOR: “If I owned a collision shop, I’d name it “Auto Correct.” (Ha!)

TRIVIA ANSWER: The 10 Teams in our Region are Greenbrier East, Ripley, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Riverside, South Charleston, Princeton, Shady Spring, Capital and Oak Hill.
