By Brian Miluk, Greenbrier East High School Wrestling Coach

The ‘Coal Country Challenge’ Wrestling Match against Beckley was postponed due to the weather. The new date for the match will be Thursday, Jan. 29. However, the Greenbrier East Wrestling Team did compete at The National Guard Duals Tournament in Summersville. WOW! 10 matches in two days!! There were dozens of West Virginia teams that were State ranked. Tennessee, Virginia and Ohio also had State ranked teams there. Dayton Christian (Ohio) won the Tournament. They are currently one of the top teams in the country. We finished in 11th place out of the 36 teams. Josiah Solak was 10-0 and was named the Tournament “Most Valuable Wrestler” for Greenbrier East. Our other award winners were Jasiel Kinder (Consistency Wins Award) and Levi Hobbs (True Toughness Award). We were very proud of our Wrestlers. We beat some very highly ranked Wrestlers and a Top 10 Team. It was a Great experience for our young team.

Our Top Wrestlers with the Most Victories so far this season are Jasiel Kinder (29), Evan Roberts (27), Josiah Solak (26), Logan Evans (23), Levi Hobbs (22), Sheldon Simmons (22), Garrett Byers (22) and Aaron Davis (15).

We also sent a Team to Covington, VA for the “War of Wrestlers” Tournament. We had 5 Wrestlers place at that tough Tournament. Cameron Zobrist (4th), Paul Flowers (5th), Rhett Miller (6th), Leslie Campbell (7th) and Brent Miller (8th) all came home with victories and awards. Great Job to all of them and Coach Asbury.

TRIVIA: We have 3 Wrestlers on this current team that have already won Coalfield Conference Invitational Championships. Can you name them?

Upcoming events and highlights:

This week (1-16/17) we travel to Christiansburg, VA for ANOTHER Nationally ranked Tournament with State and Nationally ranked Wrestlers. We feel that we have some Wrestlers who deserve the opportunity to wrestle the best competition out there. We are DEFINITELY moving in the right direction.

We will be hosting the Coalfield Conference Invitational again this year at EGMS. We are in need of sponsors. Please contact me to show your support!

A BIG Thank you goes to Greg Zafros and Joe Sharp for putting together the video of our Greenbrier Duals Tournament for our fans to watch on Television. It’s a nice production. Thanks!

EGMS UPDATE: Good Luck at the Coalfield Conference this Saturday. Bring home a lot of Champions.

MILUK HUMOR: Did you know that statistically 6 of the 7 Dwarfs were not Happy? (Ha!)

TRIVIA ANSWER: The 3 Wrestlers who have already won a previous Coalfield Conference Invitational Championship are Jasiel Kinder, Josiah Solak and Evan Roberts.
