Wrestling at the State Championships in Huntington this past weekend was truly a lot of Fun! Our Wrestling team realized that we could compete and win against the best in the State as we continue to go in the right direction. Our record-breaking season continued at the State Championships. The following are new school records set at the State Championships. Most points scored, highest team placement, most place-winners in one year (tied), most matches won and most returning qualifiers are a few of them. Aaron Davis and Sheldon Simmons qualified for the first time and wrestled very well. Cameron Zobrist won a match 17-0 and finished in the top 10. Jacob Hefner pinned a ranked wrestler and finished in the top 10. Levi Hobbs, Leslie Campbell and Ethan Asbury all won matches and finished in the top 12. Jacob Thomas looked tough as he finished 8th. Our 2 All-State Wrestlers were Logan Evans (6th) and Jasiel Kinder (Runner-up). It was a great effort by everyone. The exciting part is that we will be returning 10 Regional place-winners including 7 wrestlers who have won matches at the State Championships already. However, there is a common phrase in wrestling circles that says, “Off-Season training wins Post-Season Championships!” So, you can expect our team to continue our rise in the future. Everybody wants to win. We WILL PREPARE to win!

TRIVIA: This year we placed 2 wrestlers in the top six at the State Championships. The only other time that we placed 2 wrestlers at the States was in 2014. Can you name the 2 wrestlers?

Upcoming events and highlights

The Greenbrier East Wrestling team will be having their Banquet on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at the State Fairgrounds in the West Virginia building. It will be a tremendous tribute to our whole Greenbrier East Wrestling Family. All wrestlers, alumni, families and friends of the Greenbrier East Wrestling Family are invited. Contact Coach Miluk.

E.G.M.S. UPDATE: A Big-Thank You goes out to Lourie Fisher and the Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club for hosting a successful Youth Wrestling Tournament in Ronceverte. We ARE changing the culture. Also, Congratulations to all the Greenbrier County wrestlers who won awards. Nice Job!

MILUK HUMOR: As you know, my brother Timmy was a lousy student. His teacher once asked him to spell Mississippi. He asked her which one? The river or the state? Ha!

TRIVIA ANSWER: The two wrestlers who placed at the State Championships in 2014 were Jasiel Kinder (6th) and Josiah Solak (4th).
